Medieval universities emerged in Europe during the Middle Ages, a period roughly spanning from the 5th to the 15th century. They represented a significant departure from earlier educational institutions, such as monastic schools and cathedral schools, by emphasizing a broader range of academic disciplines and formalized instruction. Medieval universities became vital centers for learning, research, and the preservation of knowledge. The term "university" itself is derived from the Latin "universitas," meaning "the whole" or "community." It is in this sense of community we will analyze these Medieval Universities as quasi-autonomous city-states.

Founded in 1088, the University of Bologna in Italy is considered the first true university in Europe. It was known for its emphasis on law and was a pioneer in the development of a structured curriculum and the concept of academic degrees. It is often considered the oldest university in the world. The University of Bologna was characterized by a significant degree of autonomy. It was largely self-governing, with scholars and students participating in the decision-making process. The university had its own legal system, known as the "jus universitatis," which granted it the authority to regulate various aspects of university life, including curriculum, examinations, and disciplinary matters. Bologna adopted the "scholastic method," emphasizing critical inquiry and dialectical reasoning. Professors and students engaged in debates and discussions, which were central to the learning process. This model of teaching and learning laid the foundation for the modern university system.
