The book is extraordinarily researched and extremely fair. More than anything, this book helped me remember just how many amazing things Musk has done in his life (so far!). Just to give you a brief overview of his accomplishments I’ve compiled the following list.
Zip2 Corporation:
Founded in 1995 by Elon Musk and his brother Kimbal Musk.
Provided business directories and maps for newspapers.
Sold to Compaq for nearly $300 million in 1999, marking one of Musk's early successes.
PayPal:
Co-founded by Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, and others in 1999.
Pioneered online payment processing, making e-commerce transactions more accessible and secure.
Acquired by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion, providing Musk with significant financial resources for his future ventures.
SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corp.):
Founded by Elon Musk in 2002 with the goal of reducing space transportation costs and enabling the colonization of Mars.
Became the first privately funded company to successfully launch, orbit, and recover a spacecraft in 2008 with the Falcon 1.
Developed the Falcon 9 rocket, which has become a workhorse for satellite launches and cargo resupply missions to the International Space Station (ISS).
Achieved the historic feat of launching astronauts to the ISS aboard a commercially-built spacecraft, the Crew Dragon, in collaboration with NASA in 2020.
Tesla, Inc.:
Elon Musk joined Tesla in 2004 as chairman and later became CEO and product architect.
Pioneered the development and production of electric vehicles (EVs) with the Tesla Roadster, Model S, Model X, Model 3, and Model Y.
Revolutionized the automotive industry with advancements in battery technology, autonomous driving capabilities, and sustainable energy solutions.
Made significant strides in renewable energy with products such as solar panels and the Powerwall home battery storage system.
SolarCity:
Co-founded by Elon Musk's cousins Lyndon and Peter Rive in 2006, with Musk serving as chairman.
Became one of the largest providers of solar power systems in the United States.
Acquired by Tesla in 2016, integrating solar energy solutions into Tesla's product lineup.
Neuralink:
Founded by Elon Musk in 2016 with the goal of developing brain-computer interface (BCI) technology.
Aims to enable direct communication between the human brain and computers, potentially revolutionizing healthcare, communication, and human augmentation.
These companies represent just a portion of Elon Musk's diverse portfolio of ventures. We didn’t even include Boring Company or the latest ventures with Twitter. While not without fault and definitely guilty of being a government money grifter in many cases, what Elon Musk has accomplished in any one of these examples is astonishing. To achieve all of them is simply incomprehensible to me at least. Kudos Elon and kudos Walter for the well researched biography.
